I have found many useful tips and info on this and the project forums. Payback time.
Recently done an overhaul of the hull and misc. on my Sylvan cuddy. With Mercruiser 140. About a 1987 model.
When trying the engine before replacing seats and motor cover, I noticed a bad front oil leak. Must be a bad seal. Wrong! The timeing cover had rusted through and oil was pouring. Closer inspection revealed that the factory had evidently painted the engine with the balancer (pully) in place. Therefore no paint on the lower half of the timeing cover. The upper half with paint was like new.
If you are doing a good inspection of your engine, take a good look for a similiar situiation. A little probing or an inspection mirror.
I consider myself lucky that the leak showed up while in the garage and not 25 miles off shore.
Look close.

That is precisely why I will paint my new motor with the balancer and waterpump off of the engine.
