2003 Alpha one Gen II. 1:62 ratio .When looking up parts it shows one driveshaft number for 1.47 & 1.62 ratio.Shows another driveshaft number for 1.81,1.94,2.00,and 2.40.Also list different gears according to driveshaft number. So there are two different lower unit ratios.OKAY I can deal with this, and it may solve the problem.

But if you try to buy a complete lower unit, one number fits 1.47,1.62,1.81,and1.94.The other number fits 2.00 and 2.40.

How can the same gearcase fit a 1.62,and a 1.94,if the driveshaft/gear ratio is different ?

I've been out on a limb many times, but this time another dealer is out on the limb, and I'm trying to help him out.

Anyone been there,or can shed some light/ideas ?

Re: MERCRUISER LOWER GEAR RATIO 1:62

The gear reduction will be in the top half of the outdrive. Apparently 2 different drive shafts are used on the Alpha GenII drive. One drive shaft is used for ratios of 1.47, 1.62, 1.81, and 1.94. A different drive shaft is used for ratios of 2.00 and 2.40. The gearcase can be the same for all because the gears are made to spin inside of the same bearings, which fit snuggly into the gearcase. The difference in drive shafts is likely the number of splines. Hope that helps.
