Looking at the manual for Mercruiser Alpha outdrives there is mention of various lubricants and sealants. Is it necessary to use so many different ones and are there cheaper alternatives to the Mercruiser parts?

For example,

Bellows Adhesive 92-86166 - probably best to use the correct stuff

Perfect Seal 92-34227.1 - Is this just normal flexible gasket sealant?

Then there are al least 4 types of lubricant, Spline Grease (92-816391), 2 4 C Marine Lubricant (92-825407), Gimbal Bearing lubricant (92-828052A2), Special Lube 101 (92-13872A1).

Are these all radically different to each other or could one just use some good quality marine grease? (I understand about not using grease containing teflon for bearings).

Re: Mercruiser lubricants and sealants.

i pretty much just went and got what was necessary. though i did end up with sierra bellows adhesive and i use waterproof grease in place of 101. other than that. all the lubs you list, i've acquired... along with more grease guns... :D

the perfect seal seemed to be hardest to get a hold of... i ended up getting it at mercstuff.com. even though my local dealer is only a mile away.... can't remember why i didn't go there. best guess is he wanted me to sub something else for it and i wanted to use perfect seal..

reason i went with oem lubs and the likes, was i didn't want to have to figure out what was compatible. i wanted to use what was known to work the best. i figured the oem knew what that was... so that was the path of least resistance for me...

I definitely would suggest these two: 2-4-C Marine Lubricant (92-825407), Gimbal Bearing lubricant (92-828052A2).

I use what ever I have handy for the coupler...usually the gimbal grease.

As for Perfect Seal...my dealer uses it by the 'tub' in his shop, and doesn't sell any smaller. I should have had some shipped in, but at the time I was in a hurry to complete a project. Someone here said that Permatex had the equal (probably Bondo), and that is what I picked up. If no one jumps in with the Permatex equivalent, I will find mine at home later!

Happy boating!

Gee, for the outdrives I use Boat trailer wheel bearing grease for prop shaft, gimbal bearings, splines, zercs and of course the wheel bearing of the trailer. The Special lube 101 is made for the stainless steel steering rod, in salt water. If you keep after it (2/season) the regular grease will work fine.

Dont forget to use a decent gear oil and fogging oil, as well as an anticorrosion spray, on the block.

Me too! Went to Wally world and bought a couple of grease guns for $7 each and put a a cartridge in each, labeled and hung on the wall. Should last for oh... about forever. And since you didn't ask.... Quicksilver 25-40 for the engine.:)
