I have a 3 amp drain on my battery with the ignition key turned off and have traced the drain back to the alternator, however the alternator charges properly. The Mercruiser Mando 55 amp alternator has 5 wires attached.
Of the 5 wires, 2 are heaver gage and are 12v positive and ground. The 3 other wires are labeled "S", "L2", and "EXC". The "S" wire has 12v when the key is on. The "EXC" wire didn't show any voltage. The wire labeled L2 has 12v on it all the time and is the one that is pulling 3 amps from my battery. I can remove this wire from the alternator and the drain is gone. I tried switching the L2 and S wires and started the engine, but the engine would not turn off. somehow the voltage was backfeeding. Does anyone know what kind of voltage readings I should see on these 3 wires?? And what is the L2 wire??

Re: mercruiser-mando alternator problems

What year and model engine is this on. I don't recall any of the Mando alternators using 5 wires.
The L2 terminal is for an indicator light and not normally used. What is hooked to it on your setup? Something you or a previous owner installed?
With the key off, you should only have power showing on the B+ terminal, so something must be shorted internally.

Re: mercruiser-mando alternator problems

The engine is a 1997 MCM 5.7 Litre. The boat is a 1997 Bayliner Capri 2050LS. The red wire, that has 12v on it all the time, is in the same wiring harness as the other wires. It appears to be a factory wire. I think the original owner had the same problem because his wife let it slip one day that they has some problems when they owned it. The boat is like new and runs great. If the L2 terminal is for a lamp, I think I will just remove this wire and see what it effects. I have checked the alternator doides and replaced the internal regulator and the 3 amp drain was sill there. With the L2 wire hooked up and engine off, the alternator feels warm.

The alternator will get warm, down right hot, when charging a low battery. So don't let temperature be your guide.
What color is the wires going to the different locations on the alternator.
This pic should help in ID.
