Mercruiser old style engine mounting question

I removed and am about to re-install (after engine work) my 120hp 2.5L engine. The serial number is 183.... (early style).

The Merc Manual #1 specifies that the rear mount, given this serial number, should use half of the double-wound spring (it specifies the spring should be cut to make it a single-wound spring), and that the fiber washer should be installed below that. Apparently, the height of a single-wound spring + fiber washer should be just right to align the *rear* of the engine to the gimble bearing.

Now, when I removed the engine, I found the following: Double-wound spring, and NO FIBER WASHERS (unless they *both* fell and disappeared as the engine came out, which is unlikely). The alignment with this configuration was fine.

Since this configuration aligned properly before, I'm assuming the thickness of the fiber washer must approximately equal half of the thickness of the double-wound spring.

Would it be acceptable to continue to omit the fiber washer altogether on re-installation (were some installed this way originally)? Or should I get the fiber washers and cut the springs as noted in the Merc Manual #1 page 2B-2 (pdf page 83)?

Sorry for the long-winded question, but it's easier to find out now then to have to re-pull the engine later.
