I have a 1975 mercruiser out drive that is stuck in the up position. The trim motor is running but the outdrive is not moving. It was going up and down for a while but now it wont go down. Could the reverse lock be what is keeping the outdrive from going down? I don't have the reverse lock wired up yet. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Bill

Re: mercruiser outdrive

You could have someone put a little weight on the drive as you select trim down. Check fluid level. Maybe crack a line on the cylinder and let it bleed down. Just a few quick ideas. Hope this helps...

There are 2 reverse locking systems. One is electrical and stops the trim motor running when the drive is shifted to reverse. The other is an hydraulic check valve that stops the fluid returning to the reservoir when the force of the drive acts on the rams. There are no check valves in the pump, so that's why there is an 'external' valve.

If the pump is running we can rule out the electrical switch. That just leaves 3 possibilities.

1. Lack of fluid.
2. End caps on the rams have corroded and are gripping the piston rods. Have someone stand on the drive as you hit DOWN will confirm that.
2. Reverse lock valve has lost its adjustment and it now stopping the flow of fluid. Shift to forward gear and try again.
