mercruiser power tilt/trim pump failure

2000 Mercruiser with Alpha drive...when tilting up, engine hesitates then jumps up, when trying to power down, pump sucks foam into resevoir and lower unit drops but does not power down. Tried bleeding system, no pressure on reverse line. With both hoses removed at the pump oil only comes out of the up port. Nothing coming out of the down port. Pump motor is spinning. Any idea's to troubleshoot?

could be the trim rams are stuck in the trim caps. its common with genII rams not as common but still happens with the alpha 1. remove the rear anchor pins and see if the ram will spin in the cyl with moderate hand pressure.<br /> the system really does not make a lot of power for down. mostly the weight of the drive.<br /> good luck and keep posting

The trim rams checked out okay. Decided to rebuild the trim pump. Turns out the pick up screens were sealed with something clear. Couldn't see anything on them, but only one could be "blown thru" Also found some slime in resevoir! The tilt is working fine now. Now the next self inflicted problem....told by a marine mechanic to use 2-4-c lubricant in anything with a grease fitting. After greasing all the fittings, my curiosity made me take a look at the manual, which said NOT to use a teflon based grease in the gimbal bearing. Of course what I used was teflon based. So, any idea's how to get the grease out without removing the outdrive?<br />Thanks for the help on the last prob!

Sounds like a challenge! I would certainly want to get it out.

Could you use a grease gun or have a Marine repair shop
use one of the Power Grease Guns and just keep shooting
it with grease until you see it come out? Push it out basicly.

I need advise my port trim pump for drive went on the blink just clicks / where to start silenoids/ pump/ etc ///does the alpha drives have a manual down lever in order to lower would like to use sun if possible will get to shop during week for diagnosis or should i just get a used pump assy and replace whole unit for cost savings and time not many nice boating days in upstate new york between bikes and boats short ,short season
