I am very much a newbie so any suggestios or advice will be greatly appreciated. I know the possible problems are too many to count but I am looking for the basic things to consider before I take the boat to a mechanic.

The engine revs fine when not in gear but when in gear it does not want to move any faster than idle speed.

Re: Mercruiser problem

I agree, it is problt the carb or fuel related. Give more details though. What motor and drive do you have, is it carb or fuel injected. What tune-up or service has been done, has it always done this, just start, or do you know?

Re: Mercruiser problem

I was thinking that if it was a car I would guess fuel filter or air filter by the way it was acting. I will start invesigating the carb.
It is a Mercruiser 120 hp. I bought in September, previous owner had rebuilt the engine. I have used it probably 6 or 7 times, never running it much more than idle speed because my favorite fishing spot is in a No Wake Zone.

Re: Mercruiser problem

prob needs a good service, plugs and points make a huge difference!! how long has the petrol been lying in the tank and is it a plastic or metal tank(old metal tanks fill up with corrosion which ends up in the fuel lines) carb may be clogged and also check your cables as they may need greasing or replacing...good luck.
