I just bought a 1968 reinell, 21 ft boat, The plan is to use it to fish along the gulf coast of alabama. It has a 250 cu inline 6, the last owner said it ran hot, I'm gonna replace the motor with another good running 250/6, my question is doesn't the outdrive have some type of waterpump in it? I know this might sound like a dumb question, but I've only had outboards up until this point, guess I'm trying to figure out what might have made the old motor run hot in the 1st place. any ideas, things I need to check, etc. Thanks.

Re: mercruiser question

what outdrive is it? volvo's dont have waterpumps, instead there is an additional belt driven pump off the engine. Merc legs do have an impeller/pump on them, cant speak for any others.

Re: mercruiser question

If it is the 250 cu. in. motor and not the 230 ci, it is the Mercruiser 160 engine and has a Mercruiser One drive installed. Yes, it has a water pump inside the drive, which should be replace every couple of years.
Might head up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum and locate the Service manual link. In it you can find the OEM service manual for your engine and drive. It's manual #1 and is 1GB in size so, hope you have cable.

Re: mercruiser question

First replace the t-stat, then replace the impeller. And if it still runs near 190 pull the riser and see if the riser is clogged up or the flapper broke loose and is clogging the exhaust.

Then post the results. Oh you have a heat exchanger on that boat?

Re: mercruiser question

while reading your new service manual. check out the maint. schedule near the ft. of the book. last item is check stern drive unit water pump and and impeller.
it's not a large job, but big enough. so when ya go look at your impeller. i'd replace it. just peace of mind. these 1 drive impellers don't like abuse at all best i can tell. don't even think of starting the engine for a moment w/o applying water to the impeller. 15 seconds w/o water will start to degrade the impeller, a min. and a half and it'll be toast. if it's your first time doing this impeller. ya might consider doing the housing too. check the drive shaft for oil seal wear too.
if your impeller is toast, post back as there will be other things to do if the impeller failing was the cause of the overheat..

hadn't had the chance to tear into the outdrive yet, been doing a motor swap, just about finished with it now, probably will be done by the end of the week. will look at the out drive after that.

Ayuh,...

Up in the Adults Only section at the top of the forum are links to the factory Manuals,...
You outta go up,+ download it,...
Manual #1 is a Huge Monstrous pdf. file,... Give it Alot of time to load..

You Really Can't reinstall the motor with the Outdrive still installed....
It'll be in your Way...
