Help! I have a 1976 mercruiser 165 with a R model outdrive that was blown when I bought the boat. The other owner replaced it with an alpha 1 and told me that it was stuck in forward. When I pulled the outdrive to see that the shifter was hooked up properly i found that the shifter foot on the old outdrive turns clockwise to change gears and the alpha one turns ccw to shift. How can I make the alpha one work?

confusing, the shift shaft turns the same way to shift either drive unless it`s a counter rotating drive?
this is a CR drive, just reverse the F and R for a standard drive

3B-8 , #43 is the shift shaft.turned fully clockwise is fwd, turned fully counterclockwise is rev. the lower foot goes over the splined shaft . no outdrive turns the shaft clockwise to shift 12:00- 1:00, -2:00 . all drives turn 12:00(F)- 11:00(neu)-10:00(rev)

Ok thanks, you are correct mine does shift 12-11-10, but my problem now is that my cable and linkage want to shift 12-1-2, could my linkage be the wrong one for this drive? or am i just blind and missing something totally obvious here? When it is all hooked up it will go into forward but not fully and not at all into neutral or reverse.

The PO probably separated the upper and lower half of the drive and didn't mate them back up correctly, maybe for a new impeller.

The lower has to be in forward when it is mated to the upper. To put the lower in forward, the lower shift shaft is rotated clockwise while turning the prop ccw until it locks. Then the lower is in forward. It must be held in gear by keeping pressure on the prop ccw either by hand or with a bungee cord.

When it is mated to the upper, make sure the intermediate shift shaft in the upper should be positioned straight fore and aft.

one more thing , the original r drive had a C stamped under the serial number does that mean it was a ccw rotation?

Re: mercruiser R model outdrive changeover to alpha one

Ok well sorry for takin so long to let you know my progress but i was sent out of town for work. I had a chance to look at my drive today and i know you said all drives shift 12-11-10 but believe it or not i have one that actually shifts 12-1-2, i am very confused! also when i looked at driveshaft it has a "C" stamped in the shaft itself does that mean any thing? Also i cant find any serial numbers on the drive itself, is there any other way of finding out the gear ratio or any info on it?
