I changed the raw water hose yesterday without taking off the bell housing. I removed the outdrive witch made it alittle easier but just wanted to let anyone know that you can change it from the side with some patient,s atleast on a pre alpha.

The key is how long did it take to install the hose. The boat repair business is based on flat rate time if your going to make any money. There are times its better to get thing out of the way to get the job done. I would flat rate that hose at two hours. That includes washing the boat.

BRIAN, time doesn't matter when you are working on your own boat. At least in Indiana in January. But then I guess Recordhunter wouldn't know about that. ;) <br />john

Aloha Record hunter here The flat rate the marina told me was 6 hours and I beat that With taking my time and removing the outdrive cleaning it all up and changing the hose greasing everything was 5 hours There is no way that a guy could do that in 2 hours

Sounds like a job well done Recordhunter!!!Just for the "record" I had a complete bellows, shiftcable, water tube, shift shaft, bushings, etc done on my TWIN alphas and my merc mechanic charged 7 hours labor total and thats on Long Island NY where nothing is cheap. So if your local marina quoted you 6 hours for just a water tube I would stay away from them.Did you use any sealer on the hose before you clamped it????Charlie

Re: mercruiser raw water hose update

There are two flat rate times warranty and retail. Two hours to change the water hose. I flat rate all work at my shop and been doing that way for years. There are people who get the job done and thoses that cant. The customer shouldnt pay if the tech is slow. I flate rate 95% of all work thru the door. We live and die by it. If you took more than two hours you would only be paid for two. You need to have the tools and knowledge. Customers shouldnt pay for your inexperience. The original point was that some time its best to pull thing apart than fight thing that are in your way. Example cant get a starter bolt out Instead of fighting the bolt standing on your head pull the engine. Tools equipment and knowledge. There are many retail warranty guides We use Spaders and have been using it for years. Warranty flat rate isnt the same.
