Mercruiser Riser Gasket

Hello,

I have a 1986 Mercruiser 260 /Alpha One. I'm replacing the exhaust manifolds and risers and have heard that people often have problems with the manifold to riser gasket not sealing properly. I don't want to end up with water in the cylinders, so I'm wondering, is there any type of special way to make it seal properly? Should it be coated with some kind of gasket sealer before you put it on? or do you just make sure the surfaces are clean and flat and put it on? Thanks in advance for the help.

Howdy,


Use the "silvery" gaskets and put them on dry.

Absolutely ensure that the surfaces are clean and flat.

Torque to recommended tightness.

Ayuh,... Use the Mercruiser gaskets, on clean dry surfaces...

Do a fit check even without the gasket first, just to make sure you don't have anything interfering with the way the riser (or elbow) will seal with the manifold. I used a different manufacturer for my elbows, and one of the pipe plugs in a manifold was sticking up a bit, and prevented the elbow from sealing........what a mess and a waste of time that problem was.

Thanks for the help. I bought a set of Mercruiser gaskets, going to install them this weekend.
