Mercruiser shift cable problems

I too have an issue with Fine tuning. I have replaced the Shift cable, remote shift cable & throttle cable. I have ensured that the core wire of the shift cable sticks out 1&3/8 of an inch from the end of the support tube when in forward gear, & that the anchor assembly is 6 inches from center of the brass connector to the center of the anchor point. Forward shifts correctly, the dogs lock when turning the prop counter clockwise, & I hear/feel the dog clutch ratchet when turned clock wise. My issue is trying to get reverse set. The kill switch roller is centered when I shift into reverse, however the prop seems to be in neutral as it spins freely both ways. If I adjust the shift cable to allow reverse to engage, it dosent seem to lock correctly into forward gear. Have gone through both clymers & Mercruiser guides, as well as various Youtube vids. Still cant seem to get it right.

I dont have the exact info in front of me, but it was listed as the correct replacment cablle for an 1990-91 Alpha One Gen 2 outdrive. The brass lock nut threaded into the gimbal from the aft side.

Where did the 1 3/8ths measurement come from and did you cut the core to this length?

That 1 3/8ths measurement comes from manual 2 that you do not use, If you cut the core to that size you need a new inner core.

I used a Teleflex cable (from West Marine) When I first installed it, I didnt cut the core. I followed all of the adjustments exactly as written & couldnt get the drive to shift forward correctly at all. I was re-reading the clymer guide & found the referrence to the 1&3/8 inch measurment. When I checked it, I found that the core wire was about 3/16ths longer. After I made the adjustment, it seemed to go into forward gear correctly, but still have the issue as I stated in the ffirst post. SInce the entire tube is new, I can replace the core easy enough if need be. My question is then, what should the measurement be when in forward gear? It seems like the tolerance is down to 16ths of an inch.

Ahhh... Clymer strikes again! Throw that piece of junk away (or use it for a knee pad in your shop). That manual gets more people in trouble than it helps. Same as SELOC. SO sad.
