Mercruiser shift interrupter switch

I have a 305 Chev Mercruiser pkg installed 1974. Leg replaced with Alpha1, transom plate is original (#5989551). Original engine # was 5945680 . Original leg was 5925623. Both engine and leg replaced twice.
Boat shifts smoothly but delayed action ie. shift from forward to neutral, count to 5 before forward disengaged. Same thing going from reverse to neutral.
Makes docking very challenging.
Mechanic says shift interrupter switch must be replaced and it is obsolete. Considerable rework necessary to install the new upgraded design including a new trim motor as reverse lock is handled differently on the new switch mechanism.
Any comments as to how to best deal with this issue? Appreciate any inputs.

Re: Mercruiser shift interrupter switch

I think I have answered my own question, googled on the issue and found a good writeup at outdriveshop.com. Guess I have to put out the bucks for the new shift plate mechanism and the new trim pump. Also find a place to mount it.

I agree with your mechanic, sounds like a switch. If it was a cable, the engine would die, but your switch is just slow to activate.
I did one a few years ago that just had grease around the plunger on the switch itself that was real stiff and prevented the plunger from moving easily and quickly. Spraying some break cleaner and/or carb cleaner around the switch freed it up. Worth a try, but it doesn't always work.
I have also mounted newer style switchs by building a base for the new switches and redrilling. A real PITA, but with the parts NLA, it had to be done.

You need one rated for at least 6 amps to be safe. Points ignition generally draws about 4amps.
