Mercruiser shifter removal

First, I tried search and got 48 pages of hits. I have a '72 Mercruiser controls throttle/shifter. It has a black button on the shifter pivot to make the shifter throttle only. I found the set screw that releases the handle, but the assembly seems to be stuck by the push button. I've looked all over the shifter box, but can't find a way to release the button. The handle has to come off to get to the shifter box mounting screws. How does it come off?

Stand on your head and look on the bottom of the shifter handle. Some of them have an allen screw holding the handle on.

The button should release and pop back out when you go to neutral.
Since you have the set screw out, you should be able to just pull the lever hard enough to remove the button and the lever at the same time. (If I recall correctly)

I've tried prying with the handle in neutral position. The handle slides out on the shaft, but the button seems to be holding the handle from coming off.

Re: Mercruiser shifter removal

are your trim controls also on the shifter? if so you may need to remove the plate cover and seperate the connections. then as long as the set screw is loose enough push in on the button as you remove the shifter. take quite a few turns of the set screw to be loose enough. double check that first. goodluck
