Mercruiser/Starcraft Tachometer is dead...Repairable?

So I have an old Starcraft Nova. I believe it to be a 1972/73, but not sure. It is powered by a 140 horse 4 cyl inline Mercruiser (Not sure on the year there either). I can get serial numbers if necessary tomorrow.

My question is, the tachmeter isnt working, it is shorted out. I found this out because the engine wouldn't run. When I disconnected the tach from the coil, the motor fired right up. Does anyone know of a way to repair these tachometers? I would like to keep it, as it is original to the boat.

Thanks for any help!

Might want to post a picture of it, it may be a Starcraft gauge and not Merc.

So, I pulled it out of the dash when I got home last night, took it apart, and put it back together, and it works! Problem solved i guess...
