Hey guys, I just bought a 1990 Glastron with a 3.0L engine. My problem is the starter. It clicks to engage but with no spinning of the flywheel.I pulled it off the engine and cleaned the insides and lubed but it still engages at manual test but does not spin? any help...thx

Re: Mercruiser starter

before you spend the $200, pull a the plugs out and see the motor will turn over then. I would hate to see you spend $200, if you have much bigger problems , than just a starter.

Re: Mercruiser starter

I got a marine starter for my 4.3 from napa..120 bucks! <br />Pulling the plugs is a good idea,or put a socket wrench on the center bolt of the front bottom pulley with the plugs out and see if it will turn the motor by hand.

Re: Mercruiser starter

does this starter have a solenoid on top of it? maybe the washer is corroded and not sending current to the starter. if so, the solenoid can be pulled apart and the washer cleaned and the post rotated 180 degrees.

Re: Mercruiser starter

vip, hoot, gary thanks for the info. The answer is yes I have cranked the engine by hand, Thats what I thought at first, cylinders not fogged and rusted rings to bore, but found inside looked brand new. the starter does have a solenoid on top it does engage the starter, but the drive gear on the starter doesnt spin to engage flywheel, all it does is surge upward an stops, even off the engine, took apart cleaned, sanded brushes, oiled and greased....to no avail.hoot I will check into the washer, unsuure on that 1 thanks

Re: Mercruiser starter

Better to replace it now than getting towed off the lake..I think a new starter is money well spent.
