Hello everyone, hope your not in the flood zone like i am here on the mighty mississippi. My question is I bought a sterndrive yesterday, off of craigslist, for $250 dollars, its the upper and lower. It looks identical as mine, its an alpha 1 gen 1.i will post pictures of it when i get off work.My question is that when i got home,i pulled the drain plug out,and the fluid smells burnt. Is this going to be a problem? There doesnt appear to have ever had any water in there,i am just alittle concerned. The reason i bought this is because last year my boat got stuck in reverse gear out on the water.finally got it out,and back into forward gear,so i could get it home.My boat is a 1977 thompson w/merc 6.0 with a aplha outdrive gen 1.Thanks for any replys,,,Odie

Ayuh,... Ain't to sure what you've got,...
A 1977 would be a Model 1, not an Alpha 1, 'n there ain't no 6.0l motors...

Burnt smellin' oil, has been heated to high, by being run Hard...
Drain it, refill it, 'n Run it til she pukes...

You may want to invest in new shift cables; a new drive won't do anything if you have a bad lower shift cable or bad adjustment of cables and interrupter switch which could also lock you in gear...

Ahh sorry,i had a typo, its a 6.6 liter (400ci sb) I was told it as an alpha 1 gen 1 outdrive.I had planned on replacing all of the shift cables too, already bought them, plus new shift boot, and bellows, just wasnt sure about the burnt smell, guess i will take your advice and run it til it pukes. The problem with the one thats on the boat,is when i drained the drive the last time,it looks like milk,so its getting water in it somewhere =(

Im not a marine mechanic but from what i have learned on this board, milky oil in your outdrive doesnt mean you need a new outdrive. It just means you have to find the leak and repair it. Pressure test will help you find it. At least now you have a spare. 250$ is a great price too.

I would of linked to the add,but he already removed it.I read on here somewhere on how to do a pressure test,I think i will look for that, and try that first, either way,out drive is coming off the boat for shifter cable replacement, going to have to check into the price for a new shift solonoid,if its cheap enough,i might as well replace that with new too,so i don't have other problems down the line. Thanks for all the replys,I knew I could count on all of you for a quick response.
