putting a 350 merc in boat that had omc cobra originally. i've gathered alot of parts hoping to get the right stuff. motor is newer merc, but i have the exhaust parts, transom, gimbal, outdrive circa early 80's merc. here's the problem. the inner transom shield that i have is alpha series, the rest of parts are pre-alpha. i've discovered that the motor mounts on transom plate are alot narrower for alpha series. bellhousing on motor is pre-alpha. wider. questions: 1) will the omc cobra plate work? 2)can i change the bellhousing on motor to an alpha series (narrower motor mount) or would i run into flywheel size issues? not utilizing power steering, but cannot find a plate for pre-alpha that doesn't have power steering. answers, ideas, thoughts?

Re: mercruiser swap

The power steeering is added to the inner transom plate but with a V8 ,power steering is a nice option to have unless you`ve got VERY,VERY BIG ARMS

Ayuh,.... #1,... No...

#2,.. That'll work....

#3,.. Take the P/S stuff off,+ go with No P/S... The plates are the same, it's what's hung on it...

Re: mercruiser swap

thank you for help. i looked at the plates, they look a bit different. the pre-alpha is 898 series, along with outdrive and such. gonna go with alpha series bellhousing from v8, should work, right?

Re: mercruiser swap

went out to dry fit the 898 series with power steering, as i've had alot of people tell me now to stay with it, and found out the steering cable/control on the boat is not long enough to attach to transom plate. this is in 89 bayliner capri, 19' boat. control is about 3" or so short. am i missing something, or do i have to change out the steering cable?
