Hi guys, I have a simple question, I am changing over my log exhaust to center risers. The new thermostat housing has a tee fitting on top in the front, each outlet has a spring loaded ball, those outlets will have the water hose attached that goes to the bottom of the exhaust risers. My system is raw water with impeller and water pump, I was wondering what is the purpose of those balls, I am only guessing that they balance the water flow to each side. Thanks Buz

AllDodge, I thought this was a simple question. I know those flapper valves are in the "Y" pipe for the exhaust that is in the rear of the motor. I believe my question is well described, the thermostat housing is in the front of the motor and I did say t260's-350cid which are 8 cyl motors. Buz

Sorry but I have never seen spring loaded balls in a Thermo housing. Since they are spring loaded the only thing they could be are some sort of check valve. If you asked the question on "Offshore Only" they would probably of heard of them. Guessing they make sure the engine stays full of water since there would be no restriction of water going out stright pipes.

Ayuh,.... They hold back the flow of water to balance the loads/ heat,...

Without 'em, you get Overheatin' at idle speeds,...

Bondo, thanks I thought along those lines because they only go to the elbows which does not affect the flow to the ex- manifolds. Buz

I have the same model housing, how tight these ball have to be ? mine are little loose , they close the inlets but a gently pull they are out let go and go back again , is this how they suppose to operate or they have to be tight that only pressure water can move them, in other words how can one tell if they bad or good?
