I just got a call from the marina that it's time to get the boat out of winter storage. Needs to be out by May 1st. I realized that I haven't bought any of the parts I need for this year's boating season. Our last time out, the throttle/gear control broke. It's a MerCruiser Quicksilver variety. The handle was starting to get worn from years of abuse from previous owners. It ended up rounding off the spline that connects the handle to the box. All the teeth on the handle are also worn down, so it can't get any grip on that shaft to move the throttle/gear.
I'm sure you can buy just the parts, but I'm looking at replacing the whole assembly, primarily because none of the safety locks work on the handle (or control box), and the previous owner also had to move the trim controls outside of the handle to get them to work. I'd like to just get it all back to factory.
My question is, I'm assuming that it would be best to replace like for like, and try and find another MerCruiser Quicksilver controller that looks like what I have, right? I perused some listings on eBay and found a few, but they want darn near $250. For not much more, I could buy some (what appears to be) generic controls here on iBoats. They would also be new, whereas these eBay ones are used, and well used given the age of my boat and the corresponding controller. I'm pretty sure some of these guys on eBay are just boat salvage pros. What a dream job that would be.
What do you think?
