I have a 1974 i/o mercruiser with a 165hp 250 cid engine. It has the hydraulic reverse lockout system. The throttle is broke and I bought a used replacement that has a microswitch. Can I bypass the hydraulic lockout system and use a relay to shut off the hydraulic motor? Please explain what needs to be done. I am capable of wiring and electronics; however, Im not sure what to do in this case. I understand the hydraulic lockout system was only used for a couple years.

Thanks,

Not sure what you are asking here, but the reverse lockout switch is the pivot point where the upper & lower shift cables meet.
In other words I don't see a way to bypass it, or why you would need to.....

There was just a throttle setup for this engine on ebay, I was half tempted to buy it since my throttle was slipping last year. Thanks to some MacGyver ingenuity and a few extra drill holes, I have secured it so that it has more contact points. What is broken on your throttle?

Question; Have you changed the impeller on this drive? Is it easy? Also, what is your top end on this?

the reverse lockout is mech. function to prevent drive kick-up in reverse. nothing to do with the motor. control cables make it work when you shift into reverse to lock it in place and in fwd it opens the vavle to allow drive kick-up.
Thats how its supposed to work.

I bought a NOS (in original box) Throttle for my 165 Mercruiser last year off Ebay for $60. I have two older ones as spares now. What is broken on yours?

That microswitch in the control box is a neutral safety switch. Changing to a different kind of control box should not affect the reverse lockout at all.
All you have to do is get the right cable with ends that will fit the control box and the shift plate.

I understand the hydraulic lockout system was only used for a couple years.
30 years would have been a closer guess.
The newer style trim pumps have the reverse lockout system in them and the kickup ability if you hit something is done in the rams.
If you want to use reverse, you need the lockout system installed.
