Hi, I have a 1989 4.3 with Alpha 1 and a Commander control. Everything runs fine, but when I shift from neutral into forward or reverse, the engine speeds up slightly just as the shift is made. This makes it awkward maneuvering around a dock. Both throttle and shift control cables are 1 year old, but lower shift cable is older (although it worked nice and smooth when I checked it). Could this be caused by the lower shift cable inner nylon sheath being worn? Anything in the control that could cause this? Thanks for any advice- Steve

Disconnect the throttle cable from the anchor point on the manifold, shift to forward full throttle, adjust threaded black part of the cable and put it back on the anchor point on the manifold. Shift to reverse full throttle and check that the idle stop screw has not moved. Tighten the anchor nut then start the engine and just shift from forward to reverse to be sure the throttle does not move.

Pee wee I made a mistake.
Start by shifting into forward gear at idle then disconnect the throttle cable at the anchor point. Check he propeller is locked.
Adjust the black fine threaded cable anchor so that it slips over the anchor stud making sure the throttle lever on the carberator is still in the idle position and reattach the anchor nut. Start the engine and try shifting from forward idle to reverse idle. The throttle lever must not move during the shift cycle from forward to reverse.
