Trim motor quit working on my 1974 165 hp pre-alpha mercruiser. Its been acting up for a while and finally quit. The single solenoid is ok. Tried putting power to the motor leads and got nothing except for a spark. I guess Im looking for a replacement motor. Has anyone been here before?
I took the cap off the motor and it was nasty inside w/lots of rust plus the brushes looked shot.
Can someone maybe lead me to a replacement?
And, is it easier to replace the whole pump and motor?

Re: Mercruiser trim/tilt motor

Welcome to iboats and your options are very limited.

Basically, there isn't much available for parts for that old pump and motor. The best alternative is also the most expensive. A whole new pump unit. Dimensions are different and mounting is different and sometimes that gets in the way of an easy job. Otherwise the new units are about a 10,000% improvement.

dpoff, Check to see if the bimetal overload is making contact. Also, if the field and armature are good, you may be able to get brushes and springs at a local electric motor rebuilder.

Re: Mercruiser trim/tilt motor

Thanks for the replys.
Luckily I found a clean used unit at a boneyard here in tidewater va. No rust/oxidation and I bench tested it there and motor/pump could pass for new. Got a 30 day warranty, that should give me plenty of time to make sure itll hold up. As far as the pic, mine has a wider squared off bottom with the mount on the right side whun facing the solenoid
