1971 Merc I165 with type 1...Could someone explain how the trim sensor works...it appears to have a slave cylinder mounted above the shift linkage on the tramsom with a silver sensor with threads and a jam nut...this is loose on mine...how do i adjust

have looked in the service manual but i think this might be an older system...it is stamped mercury on the sensor part...

my system seems to be different than in the sevice manuals...where is the reverse lock, and or solenoid valve for it...and limit switches?

of course mine only works when you push both up buttons...would like to get this working but not finding the right wiring diagram...

Thanks!

Re: Mercruiser Type 1 Trim Sender?

You should be using Service Manual #1. DonS has all the links to them.

The trim sender is a variable resistor, which is driven by the slave ram you referred to. The reverse lock valvce is mounted on the shift plate, under the pivot for the shift lever (which has both the control cable and the lower shift cable attached to it.

HTH,

Chris....

And this should help with the electrical problem.... If it's too small to read, PM me and I'll send you a full size copy.

Great! Ummm...sorry, where is the tilt limit switch as well?...can't seem to locate it on my boat...there are identical sensors on either side of the engine with 2 wires each, near the flywheel...what are these?

thanks Chris!

Don't know what you are referring to, but the tilt limit switch, (the one that stops it in full up 'trailer' position is located on the outside of the boat in the gimbal housing......
It is actuated by contact with the bell housing.....;)

From this is sounds like you have the later transom housing, with switches mounted on the outside. If you also have trim sender inside the transom... you have a botch up which hasn't been done very well! And this is precisely why I discourage people from 'mix and matching'... It just makes life so much more difficult for someone to repair these abortions at a later date!!!!! (rant over).

Post photos of the bellhousing, and all the sensors you can see. Also the engine, transom housing and leg serial numbers would be of great help.
