I have a 1970 Penn Yan with a 250 cu. in (160 hp) 6 cylinder GM motor with a mercruiser outdrive. I looked up the serial number of the motor and it is a 1967-1969 era engine. The outdrive doesn't have an ID plate on it... assuming it is the original outdrive (which I believe is the case). What model would it be? I see references to alpha models etc etc.. anyone know what this is likely to be?

It is probably and alpha(older type is how they are commonly reffered to).It is also replacable with an alpha one.If you are lucky it has been updated. The older type had some shallow grooves around the oil vent area.some had an eye hook on the top. charlie

There is a small eye hook on the top... not sure what it's for.. pretty small to be lifting the outdrive with.. grooves around Oil vent area? hmm have to check.. but I think your right.. what is the advantage of being updated.. other than just being newer?

I am not positive of the exact difference, but updates are done for good reasons. The actual size of the od seems bigger on the updated version.I know for a fact that they are heavier and after all newer is better in this case. Charlie
