I'm trying to identify the part number for the water shutter and related parts I need to install. Does the water shutter come as a kit to install on the y-pipe or do the parts need to be ordered separately? I had nothing here when I opened it up. What exactly do I need?

There were two rubber coated flaps on that thing in the middle. You obviously need a new one. Drill the heads of the rivets off and remove them. When you put the new flapper in, pop rivet the retainers back in.

You'll also want to remove the drive to find what's left of the flapper. Those pieces tend to make it into the exhaust area in front of the prop. In a worst case scenario, they get lodged in the exhaust system and cause a blockage.

They fail from age and from water starvation usually resulting in an engine overheat.

Does Mercruiser Part #45586 sound like the right part to replace? I don't see that part having a similar bracket, but all I am seeing is it is correct for Mercruiser 165.

Re: Mercruiser Water Shutter Part Information

don't know if its the right part # or not.

the flapper looks eliptical when layin on a flat surface. it has a fat flat bar down the center of the short side of the elpise. you still have the fat flat bar mounted in yer exhust pipe. the flappers are gone.....

get yerself a oem service manual, ya'll be money ahead.....

from memory the manual says remove the exhust pipe. which i believe ya have to do to drill the rivots as mentioned above. then ya can install yer new flapper. reinstall some new rivots, silicon the end of the flapper to the exhust pipe, and put it back together again. i think ya'll find 3 bolts at the very bottom of the transom shield on the inside is where ya remove the exhust pipe from......mucho work. hope ya don't break any screws off.

folks probably are gonna dog me to death for this statement. but. i figured i'd be breakin off some exhust pipe bolts, if i could get to them. so with that in mind. the bar you have left in the pipe, won't come out. bend it in the middle and it'll get shorter, ya'll be able to get it out. heres the bad part. i bent the new one the same way with the nice new flappers and all. got it short enough to slide in. unbent it with some big pliers, siliconed it and put it back together......i don't recomend doing it the way i did at all. it's not proper and i may pay for it with a lost flapper pluggin my exhust later on......but it did get the flapper installed..........so far it's lasted a 100+ hours i'd think.......i'm inland too. don't get to far away from land.......just food for thought.......

Re: Mercruiser Water Shutter Part Information

Here is a pic of the part that they are saying should work for this setup: http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=92309F,
but I don't see anything similar to the bracket that is currently installed. Any suggestions?

Ziggy - do you remember the part number for the one on yours? I do have the OEM, but it doesn't touch a whole lot on this subject that I can find.

I had a very similar issue on my 4.3L V6. Merc no longer supply the off center eliptical flapper valve they now sell the part that you have shown. It's all plastic (instead of a metal plate with a rubber trim) and fits in place of the old valve. I cannot say if the part you sho9w is the exact correct part for your boat, but I can confirm that Mercury upgraded the design from the flat plate to the new part that you show. The new part does not rattle which is also nice!!

Re: Mercruiser Water Shutter Part Information

i just went to dougrussell.com. the part # seems valid. also i went to mercstuff .com. heres what they've got. same number.

http://www.mercstuff.com/watershutters.htm

i have gotten both of mine from the local dealer. they were minus the ring. on the mercstuff link is a pic about 5/8 of the way down the page. part number 45586, mercstuff part # 5586. that looks like the part i used to replace it. maybe confirm yer dimensions of that bar ya got left. looks like the ones with the rings are sold in pairs too. we don't need a pair. just one.....maybe the pic ya got is genereic?
