i have brand new boat with about 60hr on it. I am haveing problems getting the engine to shut off when i turn the key. It keeps trying to run and will cough and sputter for a min and then will final shut off. is it not disengaging from gear and that is what is keeping it going.thanks for the help. Is anyone else having this problem. Or is just because the engine is new and so tight

Re: mercruiser wont shut off

Try letting it idle for a minute or two before trying to shut it down. For what it is worth, it is a common problem with Mercruisers.

By the way, welcome to the forum! :)

I also had the same problem with a 5.7 Mercruiser. I started using a higher octane fuel, ran a couple cans of seafoam through the fuel system, and let the engine idle for a munute or two before shutting it down. Problem solved.

scs
its inportant to try to get this problem solved with your dealer as the ( cough and sputter) you have makes it very easy for the engine to suck water back in to the cylinders and damage the motor.

if you update us with what motor you have someone may be able to give a better idea on your problem rather than merc in general

tommays

Check your idle speed in neutral, it should be no more that 700 rpm.
It would really help if we knew what engine you have there.

SCS... Please tell us what year and engine you have.....a serial number from the engine is even better. As Tommays said...this can cause problems... do not keep running like this !!

scs
i have the same setup without the p/s and things that help are correct idle speed ,running the bilge blower when ideling in to lower the engine comparment temp and the amount of idle time before shut down

in my case the best result came from running a higher octane fuel

tommays

Re: mercruiser wont shut off

After re-reading your post, take it back to your Mercruiser dealer. It's still under warranty.
It's not right and they should fix it.
