I can't seem to loosen the 3/8"? allen screw to replace the zinc trim tab. It might be stripped or rusted. The plug was missing on top... that probably did not help. <br />Not sure how to proceed and where to get a replacement screw if needed.

Get the allen key lined up and then tap it down with a hammer(not too hard) just enough to be sure that it is in the head. Then put a wrench on the key and a vise grip pliers on the right angle part of the key and try to turn it.You may want to spray some pt blaster in the hole first and it may work its way down and make it easier.Charlie

If that doesn't work the only other way is to use a torch and slowly melt/burn away the zinc.It will melt before the lower housing does but do it slowly giving it time for heat to disapate. From time to time try loosening the bolt.Go to a Merc dealer for the bolt.I've done this many times and it works.Just be patient.

I would second what Rickles suggested. I had to do the same thing with mine. Although I did use an air powered cut off wheel to remove the bulk of the zinc first. (I also enlarged the top hole in order to get the old bolt out and new one in without removing the lower unit).

Tystick, Drill holes around the screw, from the bottom, to remove the zinc material around the screw. Crack the rest off with a chistle. Get a new screw and tab!
