hey.<br /> my starter went on my mercrusier... i got the big headed bolt out but the second bolt closer to the edge of the starter is hard to get at and it is super tight. is there any special tools to get that bolt out or do i have to take the guard off that protects the flywheel?!?!?!?!

Use a 6 point 3/8 drive 9/16" shallow socket and a 15 deg.wobble type extension.A 3" one will get you far enough away from the pan.When you go back together get new reduced(1/2") head starter bolts from the Merc. dealer.Good luck

I can't even get a socket on the bolt head

Try to reach the back of the bolt. Feel around and you may find it sticks through the bell housing and there is a nut on the back.<br /><br />Been there before.<br /><br />Bob

If you remove the little tin dust shield,<br />The bolt in Question will come out very Easily........<br />Then Before you reinstall the Shield,<br />Take a grinder,+ remove the Finger(on the shield) that's in your way...........<br /><br />I'm Guessing this is a Chevy motor......<br />If So,<br />There are No Nuts on the Starter Bolts........................

It's a Chevy motor...<br /> How far down does the little tin dust shield go??

All the way around the Flywheel Cover(from mid-way port-side to mid-way starboard-side).......<br />It's held on with 3 or 4 bolts.......<br />3/8ths heads I believe......

YEA...<br /> It all fixed i ended up taking a socket and grinding it down so it fitted inbetween the bolt head and the splash shield.
