Hi

I am looking at buying a 1994 Bayliner Capri 1850ls with a Mercruiser 3ltr lx and an Aplha one Leg. As far as I am aware the engine is the same age as the boat.

Are their any common problems with this engine or any parts that I should pay particular attention to when inspecting it.

Many Thanks for any help

Dave do a search on this forum about buying used boat, and there should be plenty that comes up. make sure you take a test ride and post anything that seemm unusual on this forum. You should get plenty of help here.

well as far as the motor the biggest single thing you can do is a proper compression test

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/97/97_25.pdf

if it passes that and runs well the exaust manifold/riser are a big wear item on any engine no way to really no without looking if the passages are all block with scale its time is done

its real easy to put off takeing care of a boat and if theres no record of things the owner has done you can figure it was not done

this usally involves the outdrive one of the biggest problems is allowing the u-joint bellows to fail and then water damage to the drive

you can check the drive oil for water but with out pulling it off the boat its hard to tell if there is a problem

it should look this inside but even if it does if the rubber parts are orginal there at the end of there life

there is a big difference in a saltwater VS freshwater boat and if the boat was left in the water or trailered can make a big difference

tommays
