All,

I have just purchased a 95 bayliner 2050 SS that has a 5.0 mercruiser. I can't find the hp rating on it anywhere. I'm probably not looking in the right place. The previous owner said he thought it was 205, but I thought that was a little low for a V-8 of this model. I had a 78 5.0 with 4 bbl and it was 228 hp. This is the 2bbl, so that could be correct. I thought I had heard that the 5.0 with 2bbl was 220 hp, but that may be newer models.

Let me know where I can find it and if this is a rated hp for this motor/year model.

Thanks,
Kevin

propshaft HP:

5.0L ( 2bbl - 190hp )
5.0LX ( 4 bbl - 205hp )

The newer models do have better HP
Your 78 was not rated at the prop...

So, you are saying that a 95 4bbl has 205 hp?

I thought the 4.3 4bbl had more than that.

The 4.3 4bbl says 180 hp at the prop

That was wrong, the 4.3 4 bbl wasn't listed. The 4.3 2 bbl was listed as 180 hp.

Re: Mercrusier 5.0 Horsepower Rating

I guess I was wondering if my 95 was same as the 04 @ 220 hp.

To be honest, I haven't looked under the cover to verify I have a 2bbl. I bought it last Saturday and left it in my dad's garage.

There's just something about having 220 hp vs. 205 hp that makes you feel better.

I guess it doesn't really matter how much I have b/c I'm only going as fast as it will take me!

Ratfish, what kind of boat do you have and how fast can you go with the 5.0

kev_79,

Remember this...

Torque - Gets you moving.

HP - Keeps you moving.

I do a lot of water sports and usually have a full compliment of passengers. IMHO, Torque is the name of the game. You want lots of it with a flat curve across the RPM range.

I have a 2004 Bayliner 205 (20'4") with the 5.0L mentioned above. With a stock 19P aluminum prop I hit 53 on the speedo (No GPS). I had about a half tank of gas, minimal gear and one other person on board. I was going with the wind and tide on a tidal river. Trim was set for maximum speed.

My Merc service manual confirm Rabidfish's numbers. The latter, post '97, use vortec heads and do have higher hp.

What's different about vortec heads? Roller rockers or a different head all together?

Different head with improved combustion chamber and taller intake ports (requires a specific vortec intake manifold). Used on most mercruiser engines, starting around 1997/1998. Do a web search, lots of info.

Re: Mercrusier 5.0 Horsepower Rating

It's true, the Vortec 4.3L make more HP than that 5.0L

It's also true that the 5.0MPI ( vortec ) makes as much as the old 5.7L ( 260hp ) 'Course... The new 5.7MPI make 300, etc, etc, etc...

Who wants one shipped to them... anyone???
Just email your credit card number...

Re: Mercrusier 5.0 Horsepower Rating

Just purchased an upgrade engine for my 84 Chaparral. Had a Merc 5.0 with 4bbl that said 228hp on cover, upgrading to a 5.7 4bbl with 300hp. This should really wake this boat up.
