Mercrusier Alpha 1 Gen 1 very hard to shift in and out of gear

When I try to put the boat in neutral from either forward or reverse it is very difficult, at times almost impossible to put the shifter in neutral while in the water. Is this a sign of a mis adjusted cable or something else? While the engine is off it shifts fine. Another thing I noticed when I changed the prop is that if I put the shifter in forward and spun the prop by hand, it would spin in the direction in which it should if the engine was running and lock in the opposite. When it would turn I could hear clicking noises. Does anyone know what is going on? Thanks

sounds like the interrupter switch is not working, it shuts your engine down so the gears will release. do as search on here for it.

The prop action is normal.

Check your wiring to the Shifter Ignition interrupt switch!

How does it shift out of the water with the engine running (on muffs)?

It shifts fine when running on the flusher. It's not difficult at all. Can the shift interrupt switch be adjusted or is it worth it to buy a brand new one and be done with it? Thanks

The shift interrupt switch has nothing to do with going into gear. With the engine running, just move the arm that activates the shift interrupt switch and see if the engine dies. If it does, the switch works.

Yeah, I meant to say it comes out of gear fine when the engine is off or on the flusher. When the weather clears up I'll go test it. Thanks for your time and help
