Hey guys so i have a mercuiser 140hp not sure of anything els other then that can any one tell me where a model or seriel number would be.
I have two problems
1 no spark to the plugs. i think this is a wiring problem that the previous owners shop messed up, because there is one wire that is not connected that looks like it goes to the coil but both of the two wires on the coil are live shouldn't one be a ground? ill take pics of what im talking about b4 work tomorrow.
And problem number 2.is the tilt controls do not work except for the down (another problem thou it sounds like it should be going down but does not move) so any help will be appreciated
thanks
Ryan

Ayuh,... Problem #1,... What do the Points look like,... Change 'em anyways...

Problem #2 is probably a Bad trim limit switch,...
By-pass it, 'n see if it'll trim up...

You definitely want to replace the points and condenser. The wires that are not connected probably go to the shift interrupt switch --- that will need to be reconnected and working before you get on the water. (But not needed to start the engine).

I would suggest bypassing everything that is uncertain for now --- simply supply 12v direct from the battery to the +pos side of the coil. Then connect the wire from the points (distributor) to the -neg side of the coil. See if you have spark.

ok but but i did a light test and it lit both post on top of the coil as if they were both + wich one should be the negative the one from the harness or the one to the distributor

Re: Mercuiser 140hp stern drive

There should be a "+" and a "-" somewhere on the coil. But assuming it has been installed correctly in the past, then the distributor wire is connected to the negative side of the coil. Remove all the wires and see which one(s) are hot with the key on.

Alright so i got the spark going i will need to do the timing and get it running next. Also i got my motor to trim up by jumping the solenoid but now here is the kicker the pump turns on when i want it to go down but it only goes down a very lil if at all so now im asking for any ideas. also is it alright for there to be like grease from the inlet where the muffs go there is some all over the sterndrive unit

Ayuh,... It's a Model 1, with a leaking seal or 2...

Disconnect the aft ends of the trim rams to let the drive down, then ya can pull it...
It could be the ram's end caps dragging, or the drives tilt pins need greasin',...
Donno which is causin' it not to go down...

YES!

You do have water pumping through muffs right?
100% you need to pull the lower and change the impeller. Any boat that has sat for years should be the first item in the leg changed for your own piece of mind.
