OK. SO the last time I used the boat was last year and I had to get towed back to the dock. I have been fighting an ignition issue with this thing forever. Boat starts and runs great until it gets hot and you shut it off. Then it wont restart. So I took out a buddy with the goal of figuring this thing out once and for all. It is a 1983 3.0 that has a new pertronix electronic ignition module. It has another new coil, new cap and rotor, new wires. So we went out got it hot and shut it off. Let it sit for a minute and go to restart and no spark. I disconnected everything I could (tach, pressure sensors, temp sensor) and still had the issue. Checked voltages and everything checks out. I took the cap and rotor off and wiggles the advance around in the distributor. Put it back together and it started! OK will maybe it was a fluke. Ran it a bit again, shut it off and no go on the restart. Rechecked voltage, but no go. Took it apart and played with the advance in the distributor again and once again starts right up. I did this 2 more times and everytime it worked. It has the Mallory distributor in it. So it seems to be something with the distributor, but I am stumped as to why that would cause this. Does this make sense to anyone? I would gladly buy a distributor or have it rebuilt if that is the issue, but since all it is really doing is spinning I am not sure why this would cause this. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Doesn't the distributor just ground through the block? The only wires on the distributor are the 2 wires coming out for the ignition module.

Yes, but check it anyway. I once had an engine with a distributor ground problem that was very difficult to find. And check that ground all the way to the base of the module.

should there be, or would it hurt to attach a ground strap to the distributor?

Ayuh,.... Sometimes there are, yes,....

No, it won't hurt a thing to put 1 on,.... There might be a drilled tapped hole on the bottom, lookin' up,....

I am having a similar problem with a 1984 3.0 except mine begins missing badly after warming up before ultimately shutting down. After cooling off, it starts and runs till getting hot again. Be interested to see if an ignition ground helps your problem. I am running out of ideas and parts to renew. Same model and similar year makes me wonder.

Although your issue may be similar it doesn't mean what fixed kart74s' problem will fix yours. It's best to start your own thread, with all the details of the engine (serial number, year, etc) and all the things that are going wrong and what you have done to try to fix it, and the results of those tests...
