Mercuiser 3.7 - timing problem ?

I have a perplexing problem with my 3.7 Liter I/O
Occasionally, while running under load at say, 3000-3500 rpm, the engine sounds like it is holding back, and is slightly hunting for power. Then after running for about 10min, it will 'snuff' or lightly backfire, and then the performance/power improves dramatically. I am running a pertronix ingnition, timing appears to be correct. Could this be that my distributor is not advancing properly ? I am also wondering if this could be some sort of backpressure problem?

Thank You in advance for any and all suggestions.

Re: Mercuiser 3.7 - timing problem ?

Timing for the 3.7l was revised by Merc to be at 4* BTDC instead of 8* But I doubt that has anything to do with the snuffing and backfire problem. Its possible there is water in the fuel or there is a ignition problem such has the pertronix acting up. If you are able put the points and condensor back in, set timing and see if you still have the same problem or not.
