My boat will not shut off with the exciter wire hooked to a keyed power source. I used an older style GM alternator. I spent hours on it today trying one wire at a time back and forth with no luck. Has anyone else had this problem ? I put it on the other terminal on the ignition and the starter does not stop.

You have the excite wire connected to the wrong terminal

I have to go and look now, this is driving me nuts. The plug with one 10 gauge red wire and one 18 gage white wire came with the alternator. Red just jumps to the other terminal and white goes to keyed 12 volt. But it is reversible but seems to be in the correct way now. The 2 terminals are numbered
1 & 2. I can't go to the boat until Friday, but I'll switch it. Then and get back to you. Thanks.
