Mercuriser shift problem

Have 1971 Mercruiser 215e. Uses electric shift actuator to spin the shift cable. Spins counter clockwise for forward, clockwise for reverse. The actuator is working fine.

I unhooked the fuse and attempted to shift manually. I turn it counter clockwise and it goes into forward fine. I can spin it clockwise back to neutral fine. When I continue clockwise it should go into reverse. It does not. It goes into forward again.

Does anyone know what might cause this ?

Re: Mercuriser shift problem

Thanks for the diagram. I have the earlier model, relays on inside. The actuator is working fine. Spins both ways as directed by the controls. What is strange is that when it spins the cable clockwise to put the boat in reverse it acutally goes into forward. The cable to the out drive seems to be function fine.

What happens in the inside of the outdrive ? What is the cable attached too ?

Re: Mercuriser shift problem

Thanks for the manual. Picture worth a thousand words. The problem was simple. The cable can slide out of the outdrive. I slid it back in and it works just fine.

To do this you MUST REMOVE THE FUSE for the actuator. Un-hook the cable from the actuator. Turn the actuator to forward. Turn the cable the same direction so the outdrive is in forward. Then re-attach the cable to the actuator.

Test the shifting manually by turning the actuator clutch. Should go to neutral, then reverse, then test forward. Should work. The put the fuse back in and test it with the control.

Again, thanks
