the bolts above the wire nuts that look like they will cause a fire for your boat, so why even spend money on the starter, you have bigger fish to fry right now.

That is rain water not leaking fuel. The wire nuts are being replaced by butt splice connectors and liquid electrical tae. Thanks for the advice.

There are three fasteners. The two vertical bolts are behind what appears to be a yellow plastic tie-wrap. There are two bolts that go from the bottom up. At the other end of the starter is a bracket. One end fastens to the block, the other to one of the small bolts that holds the end plate on.

Are you sure the old one was bad? Judging by the wiring I see, I would have fixed that first. By the way, most auto electric shops can rebuild a starter for a lot less than a new one. Actually you can do it yoursef. New brushes, end plate, bendix and solenoid and a good clean up is all it takes. Any GM service manual has the procedure in it.

You are wise buying a new starter. Too many rebuilders take too many shortcuts rebuilding these.

Have see too many rebuilt starters/alternators fail after a year. Unless you know the rebuilder very well, I would spend the few dollars extra to buy a new part.
