Mercurser stalls in reverse

I'm trying to help a dock mate diagnose a problem. 1985 Merc 5.7 w/ alpha. Shifts and runs fine in forward. Will shift into reverse and putt along at idle, but give it the least little bit of throttle and it stalls. What could it be? Thanks.

Sounds to me like the cables are way out of adjustment. Have a look at this secion of the OEM manual and completely readjust BOTH shift cables.

Also make sure ht throttle cable is adjusted properly. Just a slight amount of preload on the carb to the idle position when the lever is in neutral.
