hi to all.:)i just purchased my first outboard, its a 1989 sea ray 16 ft with a mercury 100 hp outboard.let me give you a little background on the boat/motor.for the last 6 years the boat/motor had been kept in a garage because the owner had passed.:(the boat has never seen salt water and the engine only has 400 hrs on it.the previous owner had the boat service every year.the owners wife had the carburators cleaned/rebuild before i purchased it.the motor starts fine but if backfires,it pops and a little blue smoke comes out.i have cleaned the plugs, and used a new fuel from a different fuel tank.i attempted to adjust the fuel mixture on the 2 top carburators with negative results.the motor is a 2 plus 2.the bottom 2 carburators do not appear to have any adjustment on them.i have a repair manual but is very vague.i have had several other boats with an inboard/oboard motors that i have service with little or no problems.any help will be appreciated, thanks.

well after analyzing the problem i believe that its timing related.as soon as the weather clears ill check the timing and go from there.:)

Re: mercury 100 hp popping or backfiring

I have the same boat with the same problem. This is $750 later after the mechanic got done with it.. The boat when I first bought it did 45mph with 4 250lb guys in it. Now with 1 guy 35mph top speed. Please help??

Heres what happened one of the plastic linkage for the carbs broke. Replaced (cheap $2 part) put new part on neighbor supposed to be boat mechanic asked him to sync carbs he starts twisting scews messed it up. So I broght to boat mechanic he says he couldnt fix it still missing backfiring etc. Boat runs but stalls in water when idle. Top speed reduced. its a two stroke 100hp 1988 searay(mercury)
