Couple of questions that I hope someone can help me with...

I have a 74-78 Mercury 110 (9.8hp) I believe. I have not be able to locate a serial number anywhere on the motor. It has been repainted at least once that I can tell, maybe more. Is there anyway to narrow this down, and are there other places to find the serial number?

Second question is regarding the water pump and/or impeller. The impeller was shredded so I know I have to replace that. How do I know if the pump is bad too? If I can get away with spending just $20 for the impeller I'd rather go that route if I can.

Ive been fighting my 74 1150 for about a year now....until yesterday, over a cooling problem. Make sure that you remove the plastic pump base and be sure no fragments of past impellers are lodged near the cooling water intakes on the lower unit, make sure you replace ALL 3 gaskets(1 under pump base, ) make sure it goes as follows....pump base gasket, base itself, the matching gasket that sits atop the base itself, the stainless wear plate, the round hole gasket, impeller key, impeller, pump housing, and to top it off the rubber o ring slinger that sits directly on top of the housing itsself....Also, make sure the rubber insert(grommet) in the outlet neck is there and in good shape, and before it goes back together, make sure your copper water tube isnt boogered up....Get a water pump guide tube when you get replacement impeller....It is impossible to reinstall the lower unit w/o the guide tube. I never heard of a merc 110hp, You may very well have a 115 or 1150 being that vintage....Look on the starboard side of the block, around about cyl4 or 5 and see if the s/n is stamped into the block there

I should clarify that the motor is a 9.8hp, the model (as I understand it) is Mercury 110.

Thanks for the details on how to reassemble though. I doubt that changes much from model to model, brand to brand.
