As many will know...this has a clever oil drain fitting on it that you can just attach a piece of hose to then crack open the fitting. It’s down near the mid section.

I see online that most are just cracking that open and draining the sump without running the engine first. I’ve always ran engines first to get the oil and any contaminants suspended in the oil, then drained or sucked out.
many of the guys on here with these engines ?

I don't have one but what you said about pre-drain procedures are recommended numerous places for your reasoning plus it warms the oil allowing it to flow easier and I usually change mine after I have been out somewhere with the engine up to operating temp.

I have proven to myself that over time, oil contaminants will settle to the bottom of a crankcase and form sludge and the oil will clear as a result. Proven fact. Only question is how much contamination, and how long in sitting!

On removing it, moving on to the removal, it's how much "snake oil" is needed to be added to the oil, how long to run it and how many oil-filter (if there is one) changes to pick it all up. If you deal in vintage farm tractors it's a common occurrence!

Excellent stuff there.
Got the oil changed yesterday. Very clever design on these new mercs. So easy. Oil was really clean after 200 hours service last year.

chenged the gear oil today. Was surprised to find that these outboards don’t have the usual magnet on the drain plug. Any other older V6 or all my Outdrives all have a magnet.
