Hey everyone been a bit since I posted. Long story short, I was having problems starting my 1984 Mercury 115 but turned out to be bad packs. Changed them out and voila! Now It runs like a champ once I get it started but my request is does anyone have any words of wisdom on the trick to starting it. I say it that way because it takes FOREVER to get going. Once I get it going the first time I can turn off and crank with no problems. I have tried all different methods ( prime then choke while turning key/ prime then choke then throttle only all the way/ prime choke 3 times and half throttle only). Its killing me because I know there is a certain way to make this easier but I just cant seem to figure it out. I had it cranked in the driveway before I finally put it on the water for the first time and unfortunately the battery died trying to crank it on the water. Pretty embarrassing. Anyway, is there anyone out there with this motor or good words of wisdom for me. Thanks in advance fellas.

Prime the bulb until it's rock hard. Lift the warm-up lever all the way. Push the key choke in and hold it in. Turn key until the motor fires. Tease the choke until it's warmed up. These older Mercs like a LOT of fuel on cold start-up.

Things to check - is there any slop in the choke linkages that might prevent the choke plates from closing all the way? They must be FULLY closed when activated. Verify the chokes actually operating while you're at it.

Assuming all is working as Chinewalker said, I start mine (not a 115) the same way with one change. As soon as she spits, I release the choke. If I keep the choke on after the first spit, she will not start. That's just mine, yours may be different - It seems they all are.

Mine is an '86 115, it floods really easily. I only choke it for 2-4 seconds before releasing the choke.

Its a lot easier to give it more choke if it won't start, than to deal with a flooded situation.

My inline i had problems starting it but i found out i didn't know how to start it. You have to prime it good like the other user stated. I prime mines till i see a little gas drip. One i see that, she fire right up first or second turn without choke and advancing the thorttle.
