I have a Mercury Thunderbolt 115 6 cyl, and I went to install a donor lower unit and when I originally put everything together I had Forward gearing in the Reverse position and it would not shift into the forward position. I reinstalled the lower unit and now I have reverse gearing in the forward position, neutral in neutral, maybe a little higher. And forward in the reverse position. I just don't understand how that can happen.

Gee, that can happen easily. Remove the gearcase. Turn the shift lever CCW until it "clicks" into neutral. As a test, forward is CW from neutral. Reverse is CCW from neutral.

Now set the throttle to neutral and reinstall the gearcase. You may need to "rock" the throttle handle to align the splines on the shift rods.
