My 1972 mercury 1150 is held on the boat by two bolts the twist by hand with metal discs that press into the transom, the kind of attachment you see on much smaller motors. Mine look very corroded. Can they be replaced, and what's the best way to do it?

I was able to replace the ones on my '77 Merc 1500, so hopefully yours are replaceable. The washers should come off and the screws turn out. if you can find stainless bolts of that size and fine thread, that would be better to use.

I hope that engine is bolted to transom. Those clamps by themselves are not enough to keep that engine secure.

I'll have to look again but I don't think it's bolted on, which is why I was worried.

There's 2 bolts on the bottom mounts and the 2 clamps on top, there's nowhere for that motor to go with those bolts in place unless the thumb screws fail.

Those thumb screws like you have are going to be NLA at any parts dealer, you can still find their replacement though but they are spendy but they tighten with a hex head. I can't post a link to the replacements as it's a online retailer but I'm pretty sure the Merc part number is 10-73649A 1 and they have 8 in stock.

Yea, I'm worried they are so corroded they might snap. I'm also worried I wont be able to get them out. Thanks for the parts ID.

Get some PB blaster on the threads and when you have the new parts in hand use an angle grinder with a cut off wheel to buzz through the screw between the washer and the mount on the motor side. You may have to turn the screw with some vice grips but they should come out.

That was my plan. I hope it works!
