I just got a new merc 115 70s model has 140 compression on all cylinders a little hard to start and dies when I put it in gear but idles good most of the time. . . Maybe part of my trouble is the leaking top carb that is dripping down on the other 2?? I don't think its the float because the primer bulb gets completly hard and does make it leak any worse if you keep trying to squeeze it it seams like the gas is coming out around the main jet plug or atleast that is were it is dripping and I can't get that screw out to check for bad washer any suggestiong??

Main jet is usually a brass hex plug in the base of the carb. Is that where it is leaking? Or is it leaking from the brass plug with the screwdriver slot? Those are taper fit, and use some sealer (nail polish or silicone).

Its the bottom screw drive slotted one could I just put some kind of sealer on it? And do you think that leaking gas could make it run different?

Re: mercury 1150 carb leaking

The dripping fuel should not have any effect on the idle quality. The best way to seal it is to remove it, clean the carb of any gas or oil and put some nail polish on the threads and tighten it up. Let the polish dry before using it. A easier (but less effective) was is to remove the brass hex head bolt to drain the carb. Now clean the bras plug and carb body around it. Smear it with some silicone and let her dry. Say a little prayer and try it out.

BTW - the idle quality can be improved by cleaning the carbs and resetting the idle mixtures.
