I am trying to get the idle down on my 77 mer 115 but the throttle cable does not allow you to retard the timing enough to do so. With the throttle cable barrel adjusted all the way back the distributor will only retard enough to allow the engine to run at about 2000 rpm. How do i advance the distributor forward more without advancing the timing to get more adjustment out of the distributor?

In front of the disrtibutor should be an adjustment that allows the dist. to come forward and touch with a red plastic cover on the end. adjust it back a bit. you may have have to turn the distrubutor manually the first time as it has set at the old setting a long time. get it where desired and tighten bolts after that grease the fitting above cap.

bear in mind if it has no load on it (water ears) it will idle in gear very easily. allow for that.

You might check the idle pickup timing. It should be 4-6* BTDC on that motor. The carbs should be ready to open at that timing. The brass collar on the distributor slides to make the adjustment.

Adjust the throttle cable to pull the distributor back from idle pickup to slow the idle speed. Ultimate idle speed is set by the idle stop set screw.
