Mercury 115HP '93 2 stroke - Where is the fuel filter?

I was asking for some help on a problem in another thread and someone suggested I check the fuel filter, so I proceeded to do that but can't find it. I figured it would be around the bulb somewhere, but that just comes from a hole in the hull up to the motor. My fuel tank is down in the hull so I have to take apart some access panels to see it. Is the fuel filter inside the motor casing, or somewhere in the hull?

Thanks.

I have a service manual, but its an off brand one that covers a series of motors. Is there a Mercury one that is just for the 115 2 stroke in this year range?

Thanks for the help.

OK, still haven't located a fuel filter on my boat. I have now traced the line from the gas tank in the hull up to the bulb and to the motor... no filter in that line. So here is what I see where the line comes into the motor. Is that angled square looking thing with "in" and "out" on it a filter? I'm guessing that's the fuel pump, not the filter.

Here is a larger picture of the motor and I don't see anything that looks like a filter except that white canister way up top but its no where near where the fuel line comes into the motor. There has to be a filter here somewhere, right?

It is that large white cylindrical object in the second pic. I think there's another small one on the other side of the motor. You have to remove the oil tank to see it. It goes on the line from the accelerator pump to the lower cylinder check valves.

BTW, that's a clean looking engine you have there. I wish mine looked as good.

Thanks for the quick reply... so the white cylinder it is. It has what looks like heavy duty zip strips on the two tubes. Do I just clip those and replace them with metal clamps when I replace the filter? They look like something that might have been put on at the factory, but I can't believe that filter has been on there for 17 years.

Yes, the motor is so clean you can practically eat off of it. Amazing for a '93, but the whole boat is pretty clean too. I think it spent most of its life in a garage, but its getting plenty use now.

I'm just trying to learn my way around this thing without messing anything up. This forum has been an amazing resource.

Should I install a separate fuel filter between the bulb and the tank, or is that not necessary?

That's that white canister. The reason of this particular location is that, being after where the oil line tee'd into the fuel line, it can filter any debris coming from the fuel tank or the oil tank.

Simply cut the zipties, change the filter and replace by regular tiewrap.

It's also a good practice to add a water separator/filter between the tank and the engine.
