Someone had this engine 1978 140HP Mercury blue band, including all the trim/tilt and contolbox plus connections) laying on their lawn waiting for the bulk rubbish to collect it.
Paid them some $$ and loaded it into my trailer.
Now I want to hoist it up and place it on a buck.
The Mercury dealers here in Australia will not sell the lifting hook that screws into the flywheel.
Where could I get this part from, please?
When I get it up I will take some pictures and if people want I can make a tread of the restauration of this fine piece of engineering!
So looking forward making it go again, these engines are the bom!

CDI Electronics makes new replacement modules, you can also get it from Mercury (#2986A21, only $536.12 :eek:) OR you could try eBay for a used unit ..

But do yourself av favor :) , take a comp test on the engine before spending any $$ on the beast...

The actual part is called a "switchblock" not a brain.
My friend dropped his workshop manual off for me to use till I get one for my own use.
This engine was made,under licence, here in Victoria, Australia!
Thank You, Arne, I will do an evaluation of the compression and other items, before $pending.

Re: mercury 1400 2 stroke /6 cilinder 1978.

I would like to ask the following,
A triggerbox of a 4 cilinder 85HP 1976 vntage;
Does this item work or is the same as on a 1978 140hp 6 cilinder?
My broken one has the part # .332 2986 on the back of the aluminium casting in a depressed circle if that is of any help.
They look the same but are these compatible?
Thank you for your considered reply.

No. BTW, it's called a switchbox (or a powerpack by OMC).

1978 140hp 6 cyl. use
Mercury 332-2986 @ 570$ or
CDI 114-2986 @ 350$ or
Sierra 185-779 @ 390$

1976 85hp 4 cyl. use
Mercury 332-5772 @ 240$ or
CDI 114-5772 @ 270$ or
Sierra 185-881 @ 180$

Re: mercury 1400 2 stroke /6 cilinder 1978.

Got the switchblock part in.
Has sticker on it (looks original) stating 6 cilinder 2 cycle and part number on sticker is P/N 332-2986A21.
My question is the following;
Is 332-2986A21 compatible with 332-2986 or has the seller send me the wrong one for a 1978 140HP IL6 Mercury?

Yes it is. The Axx following the part number is the version number, meaning in that case that's the 21st revision.

Thanking you very much.
I for the world could not find a reference.
I bought and studies the official Mercury service manual to no avail as it does not have part numbers in it

glastronomic;

From the s/n range, it appears that there were only 229 1400,140s made in Australia in 1978 and as I don't see your s/n here, yours may fit in this range:

852650 thru 852879

If so, here is the Parts Listing for that range:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/491.cfm

Hope it helps.

Re: mercury 1400 2 stroke /6 cilinder 1978.

Thank You for that link.
I have just checked my serial number (carefully) again and it is 8052748.
It also has the stickers on it with the advance rev range etc on it and that mentiones 1978 as well.
(If need be I can make a picture of the bits in question very easily and post them up here.)
What the 0 is doing there is a mystery.
Could it be a misstamp from the factory?
852748 fits right in the range you posted up.

glastronomic;

No, I think your number 8052748 is correct as I talked to the site today and the parts listing I gave you now comes up as applicable for engines 8052650 thru 8052899.

There are a few others with the same glitch and we wouldn't have known had it not been for this thread.

Re: mercury 1400 2 stroke /6 cilinder 1978.

Have run into yet another "interesting situation"
My fuel pump #55628 get a vacuum from the cilinder.
I did get another fuel pump send up from USA with my swtchblock.
This has part# 55629 and is completely different in setup.
No bottomplate for the hoses to connect to.
Has similair fuel top inlet cap that was broken on mine but a different membrame with a spring on a plastic end knob that pushes the membrame down.
Internally it is also different with a black hard plastic divider plate in it.
What do I have to do to get a propper fuel supply?
would it be easier to get a low pressure electric fuelpump?
(Part# are from the top cast part of the fuelpumps)
Have taken pictures but have problems at the moment loading them up:mad:.

here we have pics!

The pump on the right is the old original one.
Big difference in the bottom plates of the fuel pump.

Re: mercury 1400 2 stroke /6 cilinder 1978.

Would a low pressure electric fuel pump (max 6psi) work well instead of these vacuum pulse pumps?
(I understand that I would have to block of the vacuum hose from the crankcase and wire the pump into the harness)
Has this been dne succesfully before?
